Designer Spotlight: Meet Ingrid Spelman from Dunsborough Design

Ingrid Spelman runs her own architectural firm, Dunsborough Design, which services the Dunsborough, Yallingup, Busselton and surrounding areas. Ingrid is an international architect being registered in South Africa, Ireland and Australia. In this interview we talk to Ingrid about her career, building a house for the first time and upcoming trends.

1.    Tell me a little about your professional career? What steered you into Architecture?

I came from an artistic family where gardening was a shared activity so shaping the landscape was fascinating to me. At school I was good at maths and art so it made sense to follow a career path which combined the two spheres such as architecture.

2.   What has been your career highlight?

Academic achievements which give my work credibility have been my career highlights such as completing my Master in Urban and Building Conservation and registering as an architect in South Africa, Ireland and Australia.

3.    What is changing in the architecture space? For Design and Construction in 2022 & beyond? Do you see priorities changing?

The cost of construction is altering the way we design spaces and limiting our choice of materials. The shared economy of short stay rentals in residences is becoming a priority which requires spaces to be flexible.

4.    Can you see a benefit in working with a builder from the concept stage? if so, why?

Yes definitely! It reduces design time as costs are realised upfront and methods of construction can be simplified to suit a budget. Also, the builder has a better understanding of product and skill supply and can foresee possible hurdles so the architect can adjust the design to suit these issues at an early stage.

 5.    Any HOT TIPS for someone approaching an Architect / Designer for the first time.

A story board or photos of the style you like assist the architect in understanding your expectations. Have a realistic budget for fees as well as building costs.

 6.    What would your number one favorite aesthetic/architectural 'flair' be? That would be a 'signature Ingrid Spelman'?

I don't have one favourite aesthetic. The design needs to respond to the landscape and reflect the client's story and needs.
